I duck under Remy’s arm as he swings at my head, and I charge forward, slamming him into the training room wall.

“Too slow, wolf.”

He quickly rolls out of the way as I come swinging at him again. After I miss, I turn around to face him. Hmm, a little better.

“They’re taking longer than I thought,” says Remy.

“Well that explains your slowness. Getting distracted by worry, I see. You’re moving at the speed of molasses.”

He grunts. “You’re not worried? Not even a little bit?”

“Are you forgetting that our resident fae supreme went with her? It’s not like Nova’s exactly a lightweight herself, either.”

“Yeah, but I was just thinking about-“

In a flash, mid-sentence, Remy dashes forward and punches my chest, knocking me back.

“The hell, man?”

“Now who’s distracted?”

I’m about to respond when I see Nova walk in the training room door with Ruairi behind her.

“Someone’s ears must’ve been burning,” I say.

Nova pulls her hands from behind her back, revealing a smooth circular object.

“You got it?” asks Remy.

Nova nods and smiles. Damn, I missed that look, and she wasn’t even gone that long.

“So, things went well, I take it?” I ask, looking at Nova and then Ruairi.

“As well as we could hope. Still have a ways to go, though. Two more pieces,” Nova says.

I’m curious for some more details. “So, what happened? Did you run into trouble?”

She brings the key down and examines it. “Nothing we couldn’t handle, but a little bit, yeah.” A look of concern crosses her lovely face. I want to do everything I can to fix it, but, first, I need to know more.

“Ready to debrief the mission?” I ask.

“We should convene at 10 p.m. in the Council Room to discuss further,” says Ruairi, looking down at his phone. “I have a few things to attend to first.” He turns and walks out without another word.

“Where’s Bain?” asks Nova.

“Oh, I’m sure he’s floating around in the Arcane Room. I’ll let him know about the meeting,” Remy says. “Anyway, my hands are dirty from fighting this bloodsucker. I’m gonna wash up, and I’ll see you in a little while.”

I open my mouth, aghast. “There’s not a speck of dirt on me, wolf. Don’t lie. I’m immaculate.”

He rolls his eyes at me and walks out, leaving me alone with Nova, who is still standing with the key in her hands.

“So, did you have fun up north?” I ask her as I hand her a bottle of water from the shelf and take a seat.

She takes a sip of the water and considers my question. “It was an eye-opening experience, to say the least.”

“How so?”

“I got a glimpse of the connection that goes with this whole ‘mate’ thing with Ruairi.”

“Ah, I see. And how was that?”

She sits next to me on the bench, turning towards me. Her knees touch mine. “To be honest, it’s still all a little bit weird. Except now, it’s more of the good kind of weird. Before, I was just sort of scared of the whole thing. Now, I’m kind of excited by it.
